DIY EDIBLE GEODE

Julia saw a viral video on Facebook of college students at the CIA who made a huge chocolate geode that over 6 months had rock candy growing on the inside. Julia decided she wanted to try that recipe out but see if she can make it in less time. This is a fun at home foodie experiment.

  1. Pour sugar and water into a large pot and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Once your syrup comes to a boil bring off the heat and add your food dye and extract.

  2. Roll out fondant into a ⅛th-inch thickness on top of parchment paper and cut into a circular shape the size of the interior of the egg molds.

  3. Melt 1 bag of chocolate morsels and fill your greased egg molds. Then place in your fondant pressing down and outward. Pour in your syrup ¾ high. Cover with tin foil and let rest overnight OR longer. (Reserve rest of your sugar syrup for a later step.)

  4. You will notice in the next few days that crystals are already starting to form. Pour out the excess syrup and take your edible geode out of the egg mold.

  5. Cut off extra chocolate and fondant so you can put the two sides together. Melt another bag of chocolate morsels and spread chocolate on one side of the geode to connect the two together. Before putting them together pour more syrup back into the geode on one side. Then coat the entire geode with more chocolate.

  6. Once closed, rotate every other day for 3-6 months. Adding more chocolate layers if you see any leakage.

  7. When your ready to open your geode please do with caution as it will be just as hard to open up as a real geode.
