GRILLED CHEESE VOLCANO

In partnership with Ripley’s Believe it or Not! we created a Grilled Cheese Volcano in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of Ripley’s! Not many people know, but would be interested to find out, that Robert Ripley always wanted to purchase a volcano, although, no one ever sold him one. So to denote the one thing that he could never buy we created one out of our favorite foods: grilled cheese and tomato soup. The Volcano is built out of perfectly grilled grilled cheeses overtop a fondue machine filled with the “magma” of a classic tomato soup. At the point of eruption the “magma” turns into “lava” and when the fondue machine is turned on it turns into one beautiful disaster.

Instructions

  1. Assemble fondue fountain per manufactures instructions.

  2. Make your soup by opening up the cans and pouring the tomato base into a pot. For 4 family size tomato soups we used 1 can water and 1 can milk. Add your liquid, either water or milk, or both, up to you. Make sure to test the tomato soups viscosity before pouring it into your fondue fountains base. If it is too thick it wont flow through the machine. If it is too thin it will splatter. Use a funnel and count to 10 as the liquid runs through. If that times out right, you're good to go.

  3. Pour the soup into your fondue machine base. Wrap your machine with parchment paper and secure at the top tier and set aside.

  4. Preheat a griddle or a saute pan to medium high heat. Spread mayonnaise or butter onto your bread. We find that mayonnaise is the perfect spread for grilled cheese because it's easier to spread, provides bolder color, texture, and flavor. Place cheese in between your bread and grill until golden brown. Repeat until all of your grilled cheeses are cooked.

  5. Start your build. For the smaller fondue machine we cut small triangles out of the grilled cheeses and stacked them up the side of the machine, using toothpicks when needed to secure in place. For the giant volcano we cut the grilled cheese into large triangles and built around, in the same fashion. This is the part that you can have fun with. Make your own design!

  6. Once built, preheat the fondue machine for 5 - 10 minutes before turning on.

  7. Turn it on, feast you eyes on the beautiful disaster, and dig in.
