DIY GIANT SPAM MUSUBI

Our Hawaiian foodie exploration continues and this time we’re venturing into the famous and incredibly popular island dish, the SPAM musubi. SPAM became very popular during and after World War II due to the military food rations forcing the people on the island to get creative with the canned meat SPAM. Most people may think negatively about SPAM but interestingly enough it is served everywhere in HI from gas stations to fancy restaurants. The dish is similar to a sushi roll, but with seasoned rice, and marinated spam. Super easy to make, we thought, how could we not create an oversized version as well.

Instructions

  1. Cook rice. We soaked our rice for 6 hours in water than steamed the rice in a pot until fully cooked through, about 40 minutes for 4 cups.

  2. Cut spam into thin strips with the spam cutter or by hand.

  3. Heat a medium saute pan to medium high heat. Pour teriyaki sauce into the pan. Pan sear the spam slices for 2-3 minute per side.

  4. Build by placing one nori into the musubi maker. Layer in rice, rice seasoning, cooked spam, rice seasoning, and then rice. Make sure to compress the musubi together securely to guarantee that it won't fall apart. Secure the nori around the musubi with water. Serve with soy sauce.

  5. To make a giant one seal two nori shits together with water and build the same way with the bread loaf pans as the musubi maker.
